Yes, Your son should watch and test every download carefully. When he is done, he should immediately close LimeWire.
If there is any doubt about his computer's health, he should make sure that the Anti-virus up to date, and check the status regularly.
Get and update several Anti-spyware solutions. I use AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destroy. I use the free versions from http://www.download.com Update and run these regularly. Especially IMMEDIATELY after an upexpected pop-up.
Download and install FireFox free from http://www.mozilla.com This is a browser that is safer to use than IE. Use this for general surfing and google searching. Only use IE when you MUST have IE, such as Windows Updates.
If you have Windows XP with SP2, activate the Windows firewall and check the status. If you don't, get Zone Alarm the free version from http://www.zonelabs.com
Take these steps to keep your computer ALIVE.

multiple archives on Limewire and different P2P record sharing networks are suspect - they could have trojans, undercover agent ware, and so on that your ant-ivirus won't even catch. and you'd be able to correctly be downloading some thing illegally (and importing archives devoid of understanding it). Anti-virus on my own does no longer properly defend your device at present. Your device should be patched many times, a firewall is mandatory. And alongside with some good previous surfing/emailing conduct and person-friendly experience; you will circulate an prolonged way in the past you may reload that OS.

Out of all the programs like Limewire, Imesh ETC, I have found that Limewire had more viruses than the rest. I uninstalled mine and have not had a problem since. I suggest you do the same

When I installed and start using LimeWire, maybe out of 5 I downloaded, I got 3 viruses. So I stop using Limewire. I am using instead, Kazaa Lite, Shareaza.
But, always arm yourself against viruses, use ANTIVIR.

Go to free.grisoft.com and get the best free virus scanner available. Scan your computer and make sure there aren't any viruses already. From now on, whenever he downloads a file, have him scan the file for viruses before opening. Problem solved.

If you have a firewall virus blocker you probably won't have to much trouble. I took limewire off of my computer because it made it really slow (dial-up).

You can get a virus from virtually anywhere, go to trend micro, get a free house call, and then its time to get more security on line.

Yes. You have to be knowledgeable of file suffixes (.mp3, .exe, etc) and be aware of file sizes. Average file size of a song is 3500kb - 5000kb or so.
