Yes, I have had the unfortunate experience of dealing with this. When I went in for an ultrasound at 7 weeks, the doctor could see the sac but no baby and no heartbeat. 6 weeks and four ultrasounds later, I was diagnosed with a blighted ovum and had to have a D & C. I had all the pregnant symptoms-nausea, tiredness, even leaky boobs...but the baby stopped growing at around 6 weeks due to a chromosome abnormality. On a lighter note, I've also heard of women having an u/s and the doctor seeing nothing until they were 10 or 11 weeks along, so I guess it depends on how far along you are as to what you will see.

mainly it depends on the timing of the ultrasound procedure. earlier than 5 weeks from your last menstrual period, the ultrasound may not show anything conclusive, but beyond that, determining pregnancy by ultrasound should be fairly simple.

also, it might be better to have a transvaginal sonogram rather than the abdominal one at an early stage of the pregnancy, because its likely to be more accurate.

and yes, a tubal (and other forms of ectopic) pregnancy can be diagnosed by an ultrasound, which, by the way, can be one reason why no fetus was seen in the uterus in the first place.

an ectopic pregnancy is actually one of the things we look for if a patient has a positive pregnancy test, a last menstrual period of more than 5 weeks, especially if she complains of lower abdominal pain during this time, and we don't see signs of a fetus inside the uterus.

It all depends how far along you are in your pregnancy. Remember that one of the first things that your baby develops is his heart. An ultrasound will pick that up right away since it moves a lot.

So I'd say that the ultrasound won't pick it up if you conceived less than 10 weeks, from then on, the ultrasound should pick it up.

I BELEIVE, and I could be getitng this a little late, an external ultrasound isn't very effective before 10 weeks of pregnancy, occasioanlyl a little later. The baby is simply too small. If you want one, you have to have a probe fitted in.
The baby isn't large. It won't be easy spotting one in the grainy and not fantastically detailed image of the ultrasound.

The 1st few weeks nothing can be seen. At about 4 weeks you can see a gestisional (sp) sac and by 5 weeks you can see (not hear) the heartbeat but it still won't loke like a baby yet. There is also a chance that the baby is a tubal baby. It won't show in the uterus that way.

If you arent far enough along there is a possiblity that you would not see the baby yet. It happend to me at 5 weeks. Good Luck.

nope. the ultrasound can see a baby 3 days after you've missed your period. no baby in site? no pregnancy.

extra effective than in all probability no longer. with the intention to flee detection, the 2d bably could could actually conceal at the back of the 1st, and his/her heart beat could could be synched with the different's. Neither of those ought to take place ... till the toddler is a few form of large-hero, or large villain!
