I'm sure the fat cats/filthy rich have it figured out in some sort of vast collective tax break or something

Neither do I.

.99 has been a retail practice for the last hundred years.

It probably started when a store wanted to price a product cheaper than a competitor store, so instead of ....say...$10.00, it was $9.99.

That caught on and won't go away, although I think, like you, that it should.

I think they do it just as retail stores do...because $1.99 sounds cheaper than $2.00. Just as $49.99 sounds better than $50.00. Same thing with pennies!
