because the girl that shes talking to is her Friend so the girl is her friend as a girl. and for some wierd reason it just sounds like the guy is gay if he says that to another GUY so it really just seems better if a girl says girlfriend to a girl instead of a guy saying boyfriend to another guy. and the girlfriend thing must have started a long time ago but still pple say it so it has stayed around for a while.

I think there is a difference between girlfriends and girl friends. You just can't tell the difference when people say it, only when they write it. And then most don't write it correctly. They make one word out of it even when it should be two. Boys are much more sensitive to even a hint of homosexuality, so they refer to boy friends as "the guys" or "my buds" or something like that.
A best friend is somebody you really enjoy hanging with and have a lot in common. Somebody you really connect with.

girl friends really isn't the same as a best friend. they are just females that you hang out with. the reason guys don't say boyfriends is that they have issues they worry more about people thinking that they are gay.
