What IS "password protection" for USB?

I'm thinking of buying a 4GB USB drive and I am interisted in security options; but, I don't exactly understand what "password protection" is.

Some thumb drive manufactures include programs that allow you to create a "secure" partition on your thumb drive. This partition is invisible and inaccessible until you enter a password.
