It also helps to know MS Word and Excel, how to send Fedex and UPS packages, how to use the postage machine, keep track of and order office supplies, make travel reservations, and very important, be there every day on time and make the coffee.

You need to know how to always get up on time in the morning, how to get to work 2 minutes before the office opens, and how to leave the office 2 minutes after it closes. People who are new to the workforce usually have a time problem. Employers value employees who actually work the time they're being paid for.
You need to smile a lot as a receptionist. Working phones is easy these days. They're computerized and simple to deal with. It's the people you meet -- in person and on the phone -- who can be difficult because they're often impatient or upset. You need to be calm and helpful and pleasant.
It the receptionist desk is not very busy, you'll often be asked to back up one or more of the clerical employees. You want to do that. The more experience you get and the better you are, the more likely you'll be promoted and get a raise. Always volunteer to help out.
You also have to be willing to conform to the dress code of the office. You might think you have great style, but if your employer thinks you look like a kook, it's not going to help you. You have to be flexible in your appearance.
It's not the easiest job in the world, but it can be fun and it can lead to better paying jobs if you apply yourself.
Good luck.

tchem is proper, yet there is extra. Admin anybody is in many cases expected to have intermediate to superior MS workplace skill and typing at 30-60 wpm minimum. Many additionally require PowerPoint and quite expert utility. Receptionists are actually not in many cases required to have extraordinarily much as good of workplace qualifications, and the pay is way less.

You need to get along well with people, and be organized. Depending on the job, you might also need knowledge of particular equipment or computer programs.
