they weren't expecing an all-out attack from israel, so no i don't think they have any expectations of winning. but they'll keep fighting anyway, just to cause as much death as they can, to become martyrs.

yes they think they can win and they believe they are fighting the good fight for the justice and the and well being of thier people.
The UK was not expected to win the second war it was predicted that England would have it's neck rung like a chicken but the entire commonwealth (Empire) stood behind them and Hezzbollah believes it's allies will step up to the plate and defend what they believe to be obviously right .
Now what will happen is another story .
But you asked what they think and that is what I gather they do think. Isn't it scary to hear the same propaganda and moral sounding stances from the other side ?
If you take the flag away it's almost imposible to tell the difference between any two sides isn't it?

I don't think that this has specifically to do with religion. Using Islamic expressions is part of the Arab culture even for non-religious Muslims. Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaida are more about religion and thinking that whoever doesn't think like them (including Muslims) are infidels. Groups like Hezzbollah and Hamas simply hate Israel for their occupation and the damage that they have caused to the Palestinian Authority, Lebanon, etc. I just think that it has to do with territory, security, dignity and anger that has been building and never dissipating over the years. I think these reasons apply to Israel as well.
According to recent articles, Hezzbollah said that they didn't expect Israel to retaliate in such a manner. They thought that Israel would capture some members of Hezzbollah which would open up the possibility of discussing trading the Israeli soldiers for Lebanese prisoners held in Israel. So to answer your question, no, I don't think that they expect to win if they really didn't think that taking the soldiers would start such a war. And as you said, they are over-powered. They do realize this, but they will put up a fight for however long they feel it will help their cause.

Of course they know they are over-powered, but what can they do , they cannot just sit and watch, for the very first time since 1948 ( when Israel kicked the Palestinians out of their homes and took their land) no one was able to hit the heart of Israel, Israeli's are used to fighting wars outside their tidy and safe cities, even if Hezbollah cannot win this war, it is enough that they did something nobody ever could do.

People, especially many in the US Government, don't understand what "win" and "lose" really mean in a guerilla war.
Remember "Mission Accomplished" in Iraq? The enemy didn't lose, they just changed tactics. We are still fighting the same war, against the same army (now called "insurgents"), and it sure doesn't look like we're winning.
Hezzbollah can just bury their missiles, lay low for a few weeks, and start over again. Hezzbollah doesn't have a country. What do they care if Israel occupies Lebanon. I am thinking that it is Israel who is more worried about "winning".

Hezbollah are not as simple a structure as you think.
They are firstly a name, a brand behind which hide many different powers, including the US, israel,Syria and Iran.
If you know that Iran is 4500 kms away from Lebanon where Hezbollah stands, you would ask yourself why Iranians are so strongly supporting this brand ...?
Well here are the interests involved in the existence of Hezbollah, and that no western media will explain scientifically to the western audience.
1- Hezbollah (if pretending itself lebanese) has nothing to do with Palestine and Hamas, because Lebanon has no issues pending with Israel.
2- Hezbollah is then making the interests of other parties.
3- Who are those parties ? ... Iran ...to make pressure on the international community and interfere in locations far from their country and to divert attention of the world from the nuclear problem of Iran. Meanwhile they continue to build up their nuclear power.
4- Syria wants to show that without her, Hezbollah is going free in the wild attacking Israel. Israel has forgotten that under syrian occupation of Lebanon, Hezbollah used to shell Israel basically every single month.
5- The US are now getting money from Saudi Arabia (sunnite power with super money) to crush the Shias in Lebanon and Irak.
6- Israel itself , called in the Middle East, the funeral director or the garbage man. It is cleaning Lebanon from this vermine, and making it clear ground (against saudi sunni money) from shias, to allow reconstruction of Lebanon sponsored by Sunnis. They will build the same kind of economy of peace (aenesthetic) as in other gulf countries.
7- The Lebanese (christians and civilized) have no means of fighting the rampant shia (decadent and uncivilized) influence in the country. What the west sees from Lebanon, is veiled shia women fleeing the israelis. This is not Lebanon.
Lebanon is also made of western cultured peoples, and modern thinking and democratic peoples, not only of veiled decadent shias and bearded mullahs.
Now they prefer to have the Sunni peace of the money (Hariri's huge fortune), rather than the ideological tensed and unstable unrest under the Shias control.
Israel the cleaner has to finish the dirty job (against money and military budgets from the US) in order to establish a new form of peace in the region, and this is what is being done right now, and that is why the whole world has agreed for the cleaning.. Its spring cleaning...
The above gives enough to think in many different ways whether you are jew, arab, westerner or ignorant.
Thank you for asking the right question.
And the answer is NO ....They dont think they can win the war, and they know what they are doing. They are paid for that...
And ... the people of Lebanon is innocent of their plots and dirty deals.

Their aim was to force a prisoner exchange. They didn't quite expect the full force of Israel to come down on their heads. They were expecting Israel, distracted by Hamas, to not want to open a second front.
But it doesn't really matter. Hezb is a client of Iran ($110M in annual support, and all the missiles they want). They're a tiny number of militants, surrounded by supportive noncombatants (human shields). This is a game of whack-a-mole that Israel can't win; but it risks spreading into a wider, and deadlier regional conflict.

Hezbollah is a resistance organization so as long as they resist they do win. Their stated aim is to resist the Israeli occupation of Southern Lebanon.
Since Arabs and Jews have had disputes for 3,000 years over territory, "a new middle east" as Rice proposes seems unlikely.

Well, if they can keep the Arab world focused on their struggle and remain standing, then perhaps they can get other countries to join in the fray. In this way they could succeed. But I think that Israel could probably take them all on as in the past. I'm not Jewish but, I am definitely pro Jewish. Mohammad would turn over in his grave if he could see how modern day maniacs have distorted his ideals. And if he didn't, then shame on him.

The primary idea here has always been---to create a suicide mission image of themselves to the world and to bring Israel down on them in what would appear to be a slaughter in order to stir the Arab states into banding together in a united front to confront and defeat the Jewish state---they know they can't win by and of themselves
