I don't get the existance of traveller's checques. What is so different about them vs. using your Visa or other? Thanks.

The go back a long time, well before Credit Cards became an item that everyone has now. Plus the invention of the ATM.
One thing, they were sold for, that if you lost them, they could be replaced, by the company that issued them. A sort of insurance, in the even you were robbed, or just plain lost them.
If anyone stole them, or found them, they couldn't cash them in, with out a signature, that matched the ones, you wrote on the check, when you bought them. You also were required to have proper identification.
I'm sure that's the main reason, why they still exist today.

travelers checks are more like cash....they work like cash, but unlike cash they are usually replaceable if they're lost or stolen.
