Start by cleaning whatever you can in the room.
Steam-clean the carpets, upholstered furniture or any fabrics that can't be laundered and put those that can be in your washing machine. Wipe down the walls, ceiling, and door. Clean windows, shelves, hardware, etc. This will help to give you a fresh start.
If you are going to be smoking in this room, here's a few thoughts that may help you to keep the smell of stale cigarette smoke to a minimum.
Remember that fabrics and leather will absorb the smell of smoke. Choose wood, plastic, metal items when you can, and window curtains that are easy to wash. Forget window blinds.
Books and paper absorb the cigarette smell too, even if they're keep in a closed cabinet. That's much more difficult to minimize,
Your may want to try placing small decorative bowls with baking soda, charcoal, or another odor adsorbent around the room.
Change it as frequently as you need to. A fabric spray called Febreze has a formula available for smoke an tough odors. I have placed a cut yellow onion or two in a room after painting or in the kitchen to eliminate cooking smells. It works pretty well, but the strong onion smell can be overpowering. There are room air cleaners available too, you may want to check into something like that.

How about a clean humidifier. I have one that i bought from home depot for my cat allergies. They also have a new air spray from glade that you put this can into the plastic unit and you can adjust the timer on it. I think it comes in 2 fragrants lavendar and citrus and it did not cost much. Freebreeze works and oh my sister used to put white vinegar in a small saucer and it seemed to work it attracted the smoke. Yes i am a smoker also but plan to quit soon. When we sold your home down in ca. I shampooed all the carpets, drapes walls windows cabinets before i got the smell out of the house. and now i don`t smoke in the house.

Extra strength Febreeze it, then get one of those smoke sucking ashtrays. Unless the smoke is really embedded....if you pull out your computer( the hard drive, or look at the fan in the back) and it has a little yellow residue, the room is always gonna stink. You'll have to clean that stuff outta the carpets or replace the carpet and start fresh. Anywho it'll all depend on how bad the smoke has sunk into everything......

You need to get the smoke residue out of the ceiling, walls, and floor. Wash them down with bleach water, and change it often! You may be surprised at how they change color.
If several washings don't work, paint or recover the ceiling and walls.
For the floor, if it is carpeted, sprinkle a LOT of baking soda into the rug, grind it in and let it set for an hour. Vacuum thoroughly, then use a carpet cleaner. You may have to do the carpet cleaner several times, especially if the smoke residue is thick. If it JUST WON'T COME OUT, rip out the carpet.

Try setting out a bowl of vinegar and water mixed. Okay, so I know it will smell like vinegar for a little while, but it will kill the smell. Also, you could try soaking a towel in a mixture of vinegar and water and then going around the room and swinging the towel- it grabs the smell somehow.

Try putting some ammonia in a small dish or bowl and leaving it in the room for a few hours. Than just air out the room.

Oust fans...febreeze on fabrics...clean frequently...but honestly, as a smoker who was a nonsmoker for a year and a half, if you smoke in there, it will still smell to nonsmokers. At least I became very sensitive to it when I wasn't smoking...

The clean air unit they advertise on the DR. Lora radio show
works perfect but it cleans the air in the whole house.
Actually, they do have a smaller one for one room.
The one for the whole house is $750.00
If you don't like it they give a refund with shpping.
Less than two people out of 100 ask for their money back.

If you have carpeting and curtains in that room, them yes, use Febreeze.
Otherwise buy a spray aerosol that specifically eliminates tobacco smell. It's worked for me so far!
