The first soccer style kicker in Pro Football was Pete Gogolak for the Buffalo Bills in 1964. Gogolak had been born in Hungary and grew up playing soccer. His family moved to New York and Gogolak came to the attention of scouts when he ended up place kicking for Cornell. The soccer style kick (approach from the side, make contact with the ball with the instep) proved to provide greater distance and more accuracy, so professional football began seeking out similar players as Gogolak. As soccer was not a popular sport in the United States, many of these early kickers such as Jan Stenerud also followed the path of playing soccer as children in their native lands and catching the eye of professional footabll scouts playing college football in the U.S.

As the soccer style of place kicking gained has popularity, the number of European kickers has waned. Most high school kickers are trained to kick soccer style these days, so the majority of kickers coming into the NFL are now U.S. born.
