Hotdogs and deli meats have a chance of being contaminated with the bacteria listeria... not toxoplasmosis (which comes from cat feces). Listeria can cause birth defects or death of the fetus.
You can eliminate this problem by microwaving the deli meats / hotdogs for a couple of minutes. This will kill the bacteria.
This is the same reason you're not supposed to eat soft cheeses, like brie. And since you can't nuke the cheese, there's no way to kill the bacteria. Cream cheese is not considered to be in the same family, and is safe to eat. So is anything that has been pasteurized.
Ask your doctor for further information.

I've had 4 children (and NO, Im not old, Im only 34) and I have never been told NOT to eat hotdogs and deli meat. The only thing I can think of is the salt content. Try to eat your normal diet while pregnant, unless of course, you are a junk food junkie : ) I have also never heard of cream cheese being bad for you, pregnant or not. Just keep it healthy and everything will be fine. Besides, doctors dont know everything there is to know about pregnancy...they just paid alot of money to act like they know what they are talking about. If they DID know everything, they wouldnt wanna do glucose testing. Just try and stay away from alot of foods that contain a high level of salt, sugar, caffeiene, etc (and the other things that can make you gain weight). Your body may tend to retain more water than if you werent pregnant. If i remember correctly, fresh fish is not a good idea while pregnant. Then again, Im not a doctor so I may not be correct. BUT I do have 4 very healthy children. And one more thing.....forget the "eating for two" myth......although, thankfully, i never kept on more than 10 pounds of the added weight after giving birth, I know a few people that couldnt lose the weight they added. Eat until you are full or feel you have had enough...dont over do it.

The reason that they don't want you to eat deli meat and/or hot dogs is because they usually contain toxoplasmosis. A bacteria that can harm a growing baby. Most doctors, however, do allow you to eat these things if heated to the proper temperature. Consult a doctor first!
I've never heard of anything about cream cheese being bad, but again... talk to your doctor first before eating it. Better safe than sorry!

There is a bacteria called Listeria that loves to grow in cool moist environments (i.e. refridgerators) -- hot dogs and deli meats and soft cheeses (excluding pasteurized) are some of the favorite growing fields for this particular bacteria, that can cause quite a bit of harm to the baby in belly, not to mention that they also contain nitrates (sodium nitrate in particular), color retention preservatives that convert to nitrosamines in your blood stream -- free radicals that can increase your incidence to certain cancers by almost 70%. So be on the safe side and stay away from cold cuts/unpasteurized dairy products and any thing containing sodium nitrate!!!

cream cheese is ok because it is pasteruized.
deli meats and hot dogs contain chemicals and preservatives in them that arent good for anyone , let alone pregnant women.
other soft cheeses are not safe because they have the potential to carry a bacteria called listeria.
Hope this helps.

I've had 3 kids..i ate whatever i was craving at the time. Now my favorite is cake icing, pickles and hot cocoa..eat what you like..just make sure you are eating some kind of fruits and vegs.you with your cravings too.If that baby wants you to eat mac and cheese for 2 weeks straight..go for it.
THINGS YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSE TO EAT:Shrimp and any shellfish(high mercury levels)soft cheeses like blue cheese and parmesian.
eat foods high in folic acids and if nothing else take prenatal vitamins.also carnation instant breakfast has lots of nutrients so if you a hurry ..make some of that.

Any prepackaged meats have high fat and sodium levels, both of which you really want to avoid while pregnant. Cream cheese is fine - they mean those runny, creamy cheeses like Camembert, I think.
