If you're on windows xp, go here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
Mirosoft might make you validate your XP, don't panic, just do what it says on the screen.
Download "Image Resizer". It's about the 11th one down on the right hand side.
Install it.
Once it's isntalled, you can right click on your picture and make a copy of it at any size you want.
Make it a bit larger than you want. There's an "advanced" bit where you have to work out what sizes you want it, just enter a little over what the size requirements are.
Then open up microsoft paint, it's in start->programs->accessories.
There's little tiny squares in the corners of the picture, if you click one, hold the mouse button down, and drag it over, it'll cut off a part of the picture.
MEss about a little, if you make a mistake, strait away go to edit-> undo.
When you've finished, go to file->save as, and save it. As a bitmap.
Go to the new file, right click on that, and shrink it to the size you want, and if it needs to be a .jpg, just open it as usual and click "save as" and under where you usualy type the file name, there's a little box, click ont hat and then click on .jpg (.JPEG).
I hope this wasn' too confusing :P

Open up the pic with your photo program, check out the tools available, looking for the cropping tool.
Its usually shaped like a box. Click on the pic, and drag the icon accross the pic, for the section you wish to save, then hit the crop button. Then Save As, with a new name, so that your original photo remains, as it is. In case you wish to print that one out later on.
It's not really that hard, just play around with a couple of old pics that you have, and practice a little.

Why crop it? Just go to the image menu, select resize and it brings up a box where you can select the size you want using cms/inches or pixels. put the figures in and press OK Hey presto you still have all your image but now at the correct size.

Open the photo in IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com/), highlight the area that you're cropping to and select Crop in the menu, which I think is Ctrl+Y on the keyboard.
