it's definitely a program that's running in the background.
1. have you gone to any wierd sites lately or downloaded anything off the net?
2. when did the problem start?
3. press ctrl+alt+delete and check the prgms that are running by typing them into google search - if they're all ok, and your comp is running as usual - monitor the problem
4. if comp. starts slowing down, error messages , becomes slow, it's probably a virus

a very good virus scanning software = AVG Free Anivirus

its some program loading and then running in the back ground. when My virus scan program load it throws a grey box up for about a half a second then disappears right when my desktop appears. Most likely its nothing to worry about. make sure your virus scan is up to date , it should be update weekly.

Thats an autoexecuted exe program that is probably using DOS to run it. Its a dos program. Normally Windows 2000 would have this if youre under a network to run a few configurations when you log in.

If you have windows 2000, then you will not be able to go to msconfig. You will need to get rid of that executable program on your startup.

It's okay, just the dos based program running in the background. You can go to start and run. Type in this misconfig

Then look at the tab for startups and see which programs are running. I bet you the black box one is there. You can uncheck it to disable it from starting up.

It sounds like either a program that is loading up into memory or maybe a program u had installed and then removed. Try re-installing everything, like the Operating system and all again, but be warned you will need to back up all your work or you will lose it if you re-install everything.

Probably command prompt...? Maybe some program in your startup that initiates it. Might not be a problem.

It might be either spyware or adware. usually these two are not found by AV programs.
Go to www.microsoft.com/spyware and click downloads. you will find free software for that. Spybot (spyware) and Ad-Aware (adware) they are both pretty good.
