I always heard that his wife began the church, and that he was drawn into it later.
I also heard he originally penned the book as a result of what was basically some kind of dare or challenge made at a sci-fi convention.
Both these things were told to me by friends who are members of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronisms) which is the largest sci-fi/fantasy group in the US, and I have no reason to doubt the stories.
One thing I'm sure of -- scientology is a bad trip. They've screwed up a lot of people, and they have a nasty tendency to want to destroy anyone who turns against them or tries to break away.

No, I don't agree now, as yes as pointed out he died, in 1986.
He did infact cash in from the church very much so, taking it in more elaborate ways to avoid the IRS - which is why Scientology was originally denied tax-exempt status-, and he died a fugitive.
"In 1978, Hubbard was convicted of felony fraud and sentenced to four years in jail and a 35,000₣ fine by a French court. Hubbard refused to serve his jail time or pay his fine and went into hiding."

And he was not the first eagle scout, nor did he play a part in ww2 - he was on boats for 41/2 months and was taken off 2 commands because he was unfit - he got 4 compulsory medals that everyone else got as well. He lied about almost every bit of his life.

I think Hubbard is dead.
But yes while he was alive, Ron L. Hubbard created a cult following just to get rich.
It was based on his crazy ideas that are a mixture of Science Fiction, pop psychology and Eastern Religions.

Yes. No one was more surprised than he was when he realized how many people he could snooker with his sci-fi religion and how much money it could make him.
He is dead so he is probably in hell.
If movie star Scientologists (like Tom Cruise) were treated like the ordinary Scientologists, they would not be believers.
