I have an older Sony Vaio with Windows Me installed. I DO not want to have a wireless connection at home, I just want to be able to get a connection at a wi-fi hot spot. I have Firefox downloaded as browser. What kind of card do I need and do I need anything else??

There are many cheap cards you can buy (from about $20 and up) that you can insert into the slot on your laptop that will give you access to wifi.

Well, depending on HOW OLD the machine is makes a difference. You typically would need a PCM-CIA NIC card. Newer machines with USB 2.0 can benefit from a USB NIC card. If you don't know what your slot is, best to take it to the computer store and get the proper card. Being you have WINME, you may have a problem and may have configure things - IF you had XP, it does it automagically. Try to get a card with a CD so you have the driver for the card - that will help a lot - IF you have roadrunner, cable modem or DSL, you can find the driver at the card maker's site. At that point - it SHOULD pick up a connection. Like I said, ME is not the greatest system - you may want to see if you can load win98SE on it - which is a little better.

when you're looking for a card, it's best to get one that's wireless G,B, and A, because different places use different connection types. Netgear is a pretty good brand. I use D-Link, but i've had problems with their router and wireless adapter. just get and PCI or USB adapter (USB is easier). you can pick one up at bestbuy for $40-$80. Install the drivers for it, then plug it into your usb port. a wireless box in the corner should come up, and then you select who you want to connect to.

hope that helps.
