If their are really best friends then the rivalry shouldn't end their friendship. However if these "best friends" aren't mature enough to handle the rivalry then they are really not best friends.

Only if both parties are mature enough to deal with it.

If, so far, you haven't had to compete with each other, this will be new waters altogether. There can be such a thing as a friendly rivalry, but the flip side of the coin is a rivalry that can and will completely wreck your friendship.

I say go for it. Real friendships can withstand such tests; it's better to find out now if yours passes.

It depends on how maturely both parties behave about the situation.
