It is normal to have a gag reflex when you put something big in your mouth. Yours sounds a bit over-reactive. The gag reflex can be controlled however. It is partly in your mind, so you need to learn some techniques to calm yourself down.

You could actually have a sinus problem. Since most people brush in the morning, your sinuses could be draining and the mint vapor from the toothpaste is causing it to speed up upsetting your stomache. I assume you aren't dumb enough to be gagging yourself with the brush by sticking it too far back. Something you can try, if you don't want to see a doctor and have it checked out, is to irrigate your nasal passages to wash out the mucus before brushing your teeth. Sounds gross but it works for some people.

Maybe because you have major gag reflexes. If when you get x-rays at the dentist and stuff they do that than you probably do have major gag reflexes.

If you think it's your toothbrush or toothpaste switch to crest for both. They work greatly!

you should try a small maybe child size toothbrush and mild toothpaste. It sounds to me you have a very high gag reflux. i was the same way. it takes time to get over it. but using mild toothpaste and a child toothbrush did the trick for me

Might be triggering your gag reflex. It might be more of a problem when your mouth is dry. Try gargling mouthwash and rinsing your throat with water before brushing.

Get an electric tooth brush. Colgate makes a great one and maybe the motion and quickness will help from giving you that gaging sensation

try a toothbrush that is soft and rubbery and a toothpaste you find pleasing. gnaw on the toothbrush to try and acclimate to using it (again?)
