You could travel to Ohio Amish country (Holmes, Knox and Geuaga Counties), but that might be too boring to you...although in Holmes County there is the first Wal-Mart to my knowledge that caters to the Amish (it's in Millersburg)...
You could go to the Sturgis bike rally in South Dakota...
Or you could go to Minnesota and find the source of the Mississippi River....
Or research all the different Civil War battlefields near you and go there.

Try Niagara Falls, American side, so you don't need your passport. Then take the little tour where you can get awfully wet and get really close to the Falls. Free sandals and poncho when you go.. Oh bring some money too, you're going to have to pay for it. You can also get on the boat and face the Falls! and get a second poncho! :) (Need passport if ya wanna go to Canada)
AAAH the water hitting your face and hitting you everywhere! It's fantastic!!!
That should cool ya down.. unless the sun's beating down on your face when you walk around...
HAVE FUN!!! write a book about your adventure for me and include lots of pictures!
And if you like going west, Mono Lake...it's incredible how bugs are so afraid of people! They're huge and black and you get to see some cool porous rocks... TRY IT!!

Have you tried the upper portion of Michigan's Lower Penninsula, or the entire UP? They are gorgeous right now. The woods are pretty, and the sunsets over the lakes are spectacular! The nights don't get above 65F, if you like to camp.
Just don't forget the bug spray. The mosquitos and black flies will eat you alive otherwise!

Personally, I used to take a drive to Lynchburg, TN in October for the Jack Daniels BBQ Competition. I'd take in a show at the Opry when I was there as well and visit the saloon there (the Whitehorse is it?)
Personally, I found TN to be a nice change of pace from the fast paced world of Chicago.

I have been contemplating a trip down Memory Lane on the old Route 66. I hear they are sprucing it up again. Can't wait!

I went to see the Golden Gate Bridge and the Red Wood Forrest this year and I would recommend that, but depending on where you live, you might want to try Dallas, Texas, or Oklahoma City.

Niagara Falls before you are required to have a passport to go to Canada and back. The falls are an awesome display of nature.

What kind of roads do you like to trip on? Choose one with high kerbs and wear 8in stilettos. It works for me! I can't help but trip up when I wear mine.
