You can choose to be happy by choosing to accept everything that happens to you. Unhappiness comes from the act of not being able to accept certain things in this life. You need to be content with what you have, but that doesn't mean to be lazy. You need to work hard and take on life full throttle. Never look back. You have to be happy with your life decisions and be able to forgive yourself and others when things go badly.

Choosing to be happy is an interesting concept. I believe it is a choice between how you will perceive an event. Say you get in a car accident and lose your leg. Some people will become depressed at the loss of their limb, and continue to focus on that. Other people will look at it as a challenge set before them, and that they are fortunate for not losing their life. Its all in how you see an event. Optimism brings happines, pessimism brings depression.

To be happy is not to choose, happy is ambiguous. To be happy could mean alot of phenomenon. As for me, for a person to be happy, you must be able to know what it is you desire and satisfy this desires'. It could be material, fad, necessity, spiritual (metaphysical), physical only you have the answer.
Asking a question like this, seems to convey that you might be repressed, of actions of emotions, and maybe for you to be happy is to release this emotions. It was once said that to be happy is to find the answers in your heart. Sigmund Freud, would answer SEX, but be conscious that sex is not what people think it is. Sex is the act of satisfying ones desire, it could be eating, dancing, shouting, running sleeping or what ever you prefer.

I just did. I decided that being unhappy was pointless. Since I am going to have horrible problems in life whether I am happy or not, I just chose to be happy.
I don't know how to explain it. I just got tired of being unhappy, so I stopped doing it. Like, "enough of this already!" and poof, it was gone. It took many years to get to that point, though. I don't know what the turning point was. I suspect that if you agonise about HOW to be happy, that just feeds the unhappiness, don't it? so... the Just-Do-It way seems to be the only way.

What is happiness to you? Is it being with your family and friends? Is it being in love, going out with people you enjoy? Eating good food. Liking your job? Expressing your talents? Feeling peaceful inside? Happiness is definitely a choice, but first you have to define it for yourself. It is different for everyone. Once you do that, when you feel down, you know just what to do to bring your spirits up.

I'd say you have to understand why you are sad, to be happy. It's not a matter of willing it away... its a matter of analyzing your emotions, discovering what makes you feel them, and invalidating thoughts that cause negative emotions if they are bogus.
Being sad, anxious, angry, and hurt are all natural and valid emotions. However if you're thought processes only reinforce bad thoughts your emotions will be negative.
Being happy for some... is a process... its a matter of discovery, insight, and changing how you think using processes.
CBT is what it is called...
