a charity that calls to tell me that they have not received my pledge when I never pledged it at all. This the second time this happened with the same charity. Last year they accepted my answer that I did not pledge the money. Today they called and the guy argued with me and wanted to talk to my husband to be sure he wasn't the one who pledged it.

I wasn't sure if I should name the charity - they are claiming to be the Fraternal Order of Police (legit charity and the money goes to teen programs). I'll call the local police dept tomorrow to check on it.

I donated to the Fraternal Order of Police one time. Although it is a good charity and they do great work, when I read the fine print on the form they mailed me I noticed that "professional solicitor" that was made the original phone call keep 85% of the proceeds. I'd never donate to such a scam again.

In other words, this is likely a professional solicitor that is more concerned about getting your money than helping a charity. You never made the pledge so just be very blunt and tell him to buzz off the next time he calls. They will get the hint and leave you alone... eventually.

The Fraternal Order of Police is legitimate. I wonder if the person calling you actually represents them. Even if you made a pledge, I don't think it is legally binding.

Beware of bogus charity organizations. If they are geniune, there is not harm giving some $$. It is rare for such organization to pursue the pledge so forcibly. However, if you did not pledge, then ask them to fax and mail a copy of your pledge to you. Certainly there must be some form of evidence of your pledge and see whether it is genuine or who pledge it instead.

Let the person know that you will report them to the authorities if they call back - that you want to be off of their list and then do the right thing.

Hang up.

If they call back - answer in Farsi and tell them the booomb is on de vay. Hang up again.

Most legitimate charities will contact their donors via US Mail before they will telephone. The parcel will usually contain relevant information regarding the "promise" allegedly made in your name, including validation and verification documents.

If they call again, ask to be taken off their calling list. They should leave you alone after that....let's hope!
