There are actually opinions both ways. Sperm can actually live a few days inside you, and there is actually a window of a few days from when you ovulate while the egg is traveling. In other words, if you are trying to get pregnant, have sex at least every other day both the few days before and after you ovulate. If you're trying not to get pregnant, keep this in mind.

You are most fertile in the days leading up to ovulation and at the time of ovulation. If fertile conditions are present, sperm can live up to 5 days in the reproductive tract waiting for the egg to drop. The egg has a life span of only 12-24 hours so you are not fertile for very long after ovulating.

you are most fertile for a few days before ovulating, and during ovulation. keep in mind that in ideal conditions, sperm can survive up to five days in fertile cervical fluid!

that leaves a window of up to five days each month for those little swimmers to catch that egg! it actually is a more typical window of about 3 days for most couples, though.

they usually give you a 72 hour time frame . . when charting your cycles and you are almost to your "day" have sex every other day before . . so if your day is supposed to be the 12th of August, have sex the 10th, 12th, and 14th . . . lie on your back with your knees bent or prop your bottom up for awhile after sex to "keep them in there" . . don't do it every day cause your hubby needs to "recoup" so he has more mature sperm swimming . . (after sex, I would put a hand towel between my legs and keep my thighs together) . . . if you don't trust just going by the days on a calendar, use a basal body temp thermometer or the ovulations predictor kits you get at the drug store .. good luck

You are supposed to be most fertile while you are ovulating whenever your discharge has increased. This is supposed to make it easier for the sperm to reach the egg.
