There are many different meanings. I do not know the source of the 1st 2.

1. If you are fishing and you see a dragonfly. It means there will be an abundance of fish. But if you do not have a good heart, a dragonfly indicates that you will not get any.

2. Catch a dragonfly - marriage within a year.

3. In China, they are regarded as a symbol of instability and feebleness. In Japan, the dragonfly is symbolic of success, victory, happiness, strength and courage.

4. In Europe & America. The dragonfly was given the name of “Devil’s Darning Needle” because of an almost comical superstition about the dragonfly sewing the mouths shut of lying children, scolding women and cursing men as they slept.

5. The Navaho Indians believe the dragonfly to be symbolic of water purity and reflect it in many of the textiles and jewelry they design.

Superstitions are based on irrational correlations between sighting or encounter of certain things with a coincidental events which follow. i wouldn't believe anything.
