I had two tomaties on a vine, and my daughter stuck a clove of garlic on the end for artistic affect. I kept not getting round to using them, and they didn't go soft, they kept looking jealthy while loads of shoots started to grow inside them. Eventually they were just a load of shoots. were they feeding off the garlic?

No. But the garlic will grow and sprout off the tomatoes. You can keep garlic under the sink or in a bin and if you don`t use it. It can multiple new sprouts just like potatoes sprout when they get old.

The shoots are part of the garlic clove, not the tomato.

Garlic cloves can sprout and form shoots in your sock drawer - they don't need anything to get started.

No, tomatos, can't live on garlic.

YOU CAN WEIGHT A TOMATO VINE ON THE GROUND AND IT WILL START TO SEND OUT ROOTS AND GROW. THEY PROBABLY WENT FOR THE MOISTURE IN THE GARLIC TO SEND OUT MORE ROOTS.
