When did it originate and is it a saying that developed over time or can it be traced to a certain person?

It's an Italian proverb.

Looking at the saying from a logical standpoint:
Women, especially those in a so-called committed relationship, don't enjoy it when their men gamble (playing cards for example). And I'm sure there have been many divorces over gambling.
So in the end, it's not so much luck as as logic and the fundamental longing for security that gambling, by nature, deprives a relationship of...

So I'm guessing the saying developed over time. Probably by guys who couldn't understand that their women were leaving them because of gambling.
