Democrats didn't always have the same beliefs as they do today. Earlier in US history democrats were considered the conservatives and the Republicans were radical (Democrats being for strict Democracy and Republicans wanting a more Republic-like government). It was the Southern Democrats who did not want African Americans to have the same rights as white Americans, but that was quite a while ago. Times change, that's why they have history classes.

Actually, Conservatives did. Even if they were "democrats", they were a different kind. Just like Republicans were slightly more left then than they are now. (Although, no Republicans back then believed that blacks deserved rights anyway. They just wanted to prevent the South from gaining economic control through cotton, and the best way they saw to do that was by freeing the slaves who did the labor thus making cotton plantations pay workers.)
I'm not saying what Lincoln was doing wasn't good...but his intentions were slightly malicious in some ways.

Because the conservatives of today are acting like those southern democrats. How many conservatives do you know that are a person of color? As far as I know all the conservative people of color are millionaires and are in that party to keep their money safe. Southern Democrats have changed, as have the conservatives.

most Democrats in the south during the 60's and when it mattered re: your question were what were called:
Southern Conservative Democrats - most have changed parties and are now Republicans.
They finally decided to make their peace with Abraham lincoln and the civil war over 100 years later.
It's the south - what can you say - they're not that bright - proof - the whole area voted against their own interests and put Georgy into the White House. Now they pay the brunt of the tax burden and send their sons to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Funny....if you read your history books in school, you would know that most of the Southern people actually treated "blacks" quite nicely (like members of their family). It was the Northern people who treated them so badly after they had been freed. A lot of them returned to the South because they were so poorly treated and couldn't find work. Although most slaves were "black", some weren't. Some people had slaves because others owed them money and barter. You should really do your research before you ask such an uneducated question.

Definition of republican and democrat is so convulated, I dont understasnd why people stand with only one party, both parties have similar ideals, similar policies they only differ when it comes to gay marriage and abortion but are these really key issues to that cause such a diffrence ? as for your question im not surprised if it was either party, but you flawed in one area it was conservative democrats that sustained slavery and discrimination in the south. a simple google search would tell you that .

it's Democrats that say that and they like to lie about everything. Yes you are right, it was Southern Democrats. Even though that may not be the case anymore, it wasn't us.

It was both...but, Dems where anti de-segregation, against black voter rights....the list goes on. The parties kind of switched ideologies at some point.
Now....somehow, the Dems have tricked black people into thinking they want to help them. Which has made many blacks complacent and has caused them to expect others to do things for them.
