Formal attire means that you wear a floor length gown. Wear whatever colour that you want, but a dark Gold (not too light or you'll draw away from the bride) would probably be stunning. I'll link to some examples.
Formal short red dress. lol. What a shame that people don't know what 'formal' means anymore and instead they just make crap up. : ( You should NEVER wear red to a wedding unless it is a very very deep or burgundy red. Again, it may draw away from the bride.
Tea length is ALMOST acceptable, if it goes all the way to the ankles. No calf-length dresses. I'll link to one that's pretty good.
And if your dress does not have sleeves, you'll need a wrap for the chruch and in case you get cold. No bare shoulders in the church, please.

okay. since its an afternoon wedding, a knee to tea length dress would be most appropriate. for fall, a formal color would be anywhere from burgundy to navy- something that compliments your skintone, tho. a cute skirt with matching top and removable sweater is always good, since fall weather can be unpredictable (at least where i am).

Depending on your skin tone, I'd wear something long, elegant, not too heavy in a flattering color. You might want to layer with either a stole or shawl in case it gets cool, but have the dress be nice enough to DANCE in!
Have fun!

Something in a tea length - perhaps a black dress with a bit of shimmer or even a soft teal color would be stunning.

burgundy, dark green, plum, or a brown color would be great for fall, or if you can pull it off, get a nice copper colored dress. go for something simple and jazz it up nice jewlery. also, when in doubt wear black--black never goes out style. :-)
