It almost drives me insane that so many people can be so incredibly ignorant about astronomy. Not only does every question in the category get 90% completely wrong answers, people ask the supidest questions!! Half of them don't seem to know the difference between a galaxy and our solar system...or they think things they see on Star Trek are real. It's not nearly so bad in the other cateories, but astronomy seems to bring out the kooks and idiots in droves!! Aaaaarrgh!!!

And, yes, I'm perfectly aware that I'm likely to get a bunch of stupid, moronic, and insulting answers. But that's okay, I've blasted enough of you morons out there already that I can put up with whatever you throw back. I just wish more people were capable of actually thinking before asking or answering questions.

About time that this was said. I don't know what the minds of most of the posters here are actually filled with but it seems to me that there is a fundamental lack of not only specific knowledge, but also general knowledge amongst most of the people who post here. It's a horribly sad indictment on the education system and the media that they can't teach nor present factual materials for people to look at and absorb. I'd even go as far to say that 80% of the people here are functionally illiterate. The standard of writing and comprehension that I've seen so far is absolutely woeful. It's a wonder many of you even got out of elementary/primary school!!!. Now I know there are many here from countries where English is not their native tongue. They can be forgiven for not being able to converse in English, but for most of you, that isn't the case. Much of the bad English is just laziness.....you have gotten into the habit of speaking this trash lingo which sounds more like the gibbering of chimpanzees than anything, instead of trying to speak like most normal people. Do you want to sound like an uneducated dunce, instead of someone who's actually gone to highschool and gotten a diploma??. It's not cool....it's puerile and pathetic and you'll be forever stigmatised as sounding like a rock ape. No good for trying to get a job, except in a street gang as a thug.

What is also annoying is seeing the same question repeated over and over again. Especially when it's been answered by those with the knowledge to answer it correctly a half a dozen times or more. Please, go and read the other pages of questions...you may find the answer you're looking for.

Some of us are very knowledgeable in Astronomy.....some have degrees in it, as well as in other sciences. Yes, that makes us specialists, but quite a few of us are also very conversant in many of the other sciences as well. We can hold our own in many diverse scientific discussions and many also know how to bring that knowledge down to a level that most people can understand. We know how to teach because some of us are naturals at it. That's why we get annoyed when we see what's going on. We try to help but it seems we hit our heads up against a brick wall. It just gets frustrating and then you get posts like this venting that frustration. Just remember where we're coming from, OK :):)

Actually I can thoroughly sympathize with you, I was seriously perusing a degree in astronomy back in the early 80’s and I’d occasionally go out to the bar with a few of my other classmates and occasionally I’d get asked about what I was majoring in and when I’d say astronomy they’d ask me if I could give them a forecast of their horoscope. Believe me, sometimes I’d seriously have to have someone restrain me from wanting to pound some stoner idiot into the asphalt because he wanted to know what it meant that Mercury was in opposition.

Some of the highlights of idiot astronomy include:

Why didn’t the astronauts just deploy there parachutes to land on the moon?

If Venus is closer to the sun than why does it stay up so long after the sun sets?

So the other galaxies are in orbit around ours?

So, like do the aliens have their own horoscopes too?

Didn’t the big bang kill off all the dinosaurs?

So if you can’t travel faster than the speed of light, then why is the Millennium Falcon the fastest ship in the galaxy?

I think that you have a point in saying that many people don't know much about astronomy. I agree, but that doesn't mean that they're idiots. I'm sure that there are some issues or subjects that you are not that well informed about and you also have questions too, but that doesn't make YOU an idiot. It is completely normal for somebody to ask a question if they aren't sure about whatever it is that they want to find out.

I understand where you are comming from and i have also pondered this before and i came to a solution.
WE ARE ALL IDIOTS.........I know that it may seem like a stupid point of view but just CHECK THIS OUT.
Each individual has his or her special interest but no one know a lot about everything, most of us are just specialists. So although you may be an expert in a particular field we are ignorant in another.
You maybe a wiz in astronomy but you dont know about Beenie Man's Latest video, to a dedicated music lover you ARE AN IDIOT.
Now to the meat of your question why most people know nothing about Space, it has to do with the mind training, personlaity template creater called the TV.
Most people really want to fit in so they do whatever the TV say is cool hense most persons will only know about the stuff that are defined to be cool and as sad as it seems outer space is just not one of them although its so interesting.
WE SHOULD HAVE HAD TELEVISION STATIONS DEDICATED TO OUTER SPACE BY NOW(if there are some then i'm IGNORANT to it.).

I'll bet there's not as many kooks and idiots in astronomy as their are in government.

Have you heard the idiots that say Bush lied? But none of them can produce any evidence. They're just a bunch of parrot's mimmicing what they see on tv. CNN said it so i'll say it too.

Also, there are idiots all over. Have you noticed the spelling and grammar problems on here? This site is filled with 6 year olds of all ages. Makes me sad for the future.

It's the reward system. Post enough stupid answers, and you earn enough points to ask stupid questions. Also, most internet groups are based on a conversational model, so idiots get called out. YA is structured to discourage that sort of give-and-take.

Yep I know what ya mean.
I had a Galaxy 500 once, had a 390ci motor, I think it came from this solar system. The Klingon that sold it to me, I think he was Moron, I know he lived in Utah and had several wife's. Always reading that book of Moron.
I know what you mean about that Astro-money, took my wife a long time to save up for that Astro-van she drives. I think it is from this Solar system also.

Talk like a Pirate....ARRRRggg.

I am sure you will look like an idiot in some other topic. Because some one is not a master in that field they should not be curious. This is not for only top scientists. This is mainly for common people. You Einsteins should move out or just get used to it

I'm with you. Just remembe there's no qualification for answering on this forum - want some brain power in the field - get off of yahoo questions and get into some science acadamia pages re: the subjects of interest.

sorry that not all of us can be as smart as you. If everyone new astronomy as well as you then no one would ask or answer. Then you wouldn't have anything to b*tch about. sorry for being so moronic or stuipd. so if i ever have a question about astronomy i'll be sure to ignore everyone's answer but yours since you know everything.
