I didn't know that.. and he's one of my favorite composers too. My favorites are his orchestration of Pictures at an Exhibition, but his ultimate masterpieces are his piano works, like Le Tombeau de Couperin.. i have this one playing nonstop on my iPod.

Are you sure you aren't confusing this with Alexandr Borodin, who was a chemist with the Naval Academy? Borodin was a great composer, in fact a colleague of Mussorgsky, who wrote the piano version of the Pictures at an exhibition.
