See cell theory:
1. The cell is the fundamental unit of structure and function in living things.
2. All organisms are made up of one or more cells.
3. Cells arise from other cells through cellular division.
4. Cells carry genetic material passed to daughter cells during cellular division.
5. All cells are essentially the same in chemical composition.
Energy flow (metabolism and biochemistry) occurs within cells.
This is also the reason some things, especially viruses are not considered organisms.

There are plenty to choose from.
Let's start with
1. Obtaining material. All organisms obtain and incorporate or otherwise use materials from their environments.
2. Obtaining energy. All organisms obtain and use energy.
3. Excreting waste products. All organisms excrete wastes.
4. Contain information. All organisms contain information. All life-as-we-know-it contain this information in the form of data encoded in nucleic acids.

they respire, or take in certain chemicals, change them into new chemicals and use the energy created from the process. They grow and develop with cell divisions and the development of specialized cells. They reproduce either through divison or fission, or they exchange gametes to create new offspring. They respond to stimuli, like when you pick up a rock and see all the bugs underneath just scatter everywhere.

A mechanism of biological inheritance, usually DNA but sometimes RNA in the case of some viruses (though whether viruses constitute organisms per se is another debate entirely).
