reason: either you will love them or you'll hate them. If you love them you'll want more, and if you hate them you'll want less. Either way you loose less money when you change.
I'm assuming you're of the female persausion. dats good. you will not be so tempted to be stupid. with boys there is a certain part of our anatomy that makes us stupid, but you probably already know that. start off with a 250cc or so. it will teach you to ride a crotch rocket(which is ridden like no other bike) it's sorta like teaching a person to shoot with a double 12 that tends to kick a little(my daddy did that-it knocked me about 15 feet into a beaver dam-that was 50+yrs ago and I still remember it) I witness about 1 wreck a week from bad riders trying to keep up with good riders. so, have fun, be safe and give'm hell

They are called crtotch rockets, yes they do look sporty. I have been riding bikes for a long long time and those are very dangerous bikes. Yes they may look cool, but they are killers and I know this from experience. I work in a funeral home and last year within a months time we had 3 kids (I say kids because they were 18, 20 & 21 years of age) and they were all killed on this type of bike. One lost control while going 80, the other could not make a turn and ran into a tree, third ran into a building. They were all going too fast + they had been drinking. If you want to get a bike look into something like a Suzuki Intruder, or a Honda. Take lessons and ride safe. Don't become another statistic for those crotch rockets. Ok, I will get off of my soap box now.

[Hehe.] I always call them crotchrockets, but officially they are called "sport" motorcycles. I believe all the major manufacturers make a version of them. The motorcycles you sit straight up on, like the[, hehe,] vintage motorcycles were called "standards". The lean back on bikes are "cruisers" or "touring", I think depending on if there is storage or saddlebags. Last but not least is the "sport tourer". It is half sport bike and half touring bike, the closest thing manufactured today to a standard.
Yes, they are good bikes, all of them. If you are considering buying one, please take a course through someone like http://www.msf-usa.org/ and then consider how and where you'll use it. I like sports tourer because I can ride it all day and bring a change of clothes and some drinking fuids.

They're not bad, as long as you respect them. Any bike can kill you if you're stupid enough... but sportbikes tend to be less tolerant of 'new rider' mistakes.

As for the 'you won't be accepted in the riding community, get a Harley' answers, it ain't WHAT you ride, it's THAT you ride.

Yeah, people look really really stupid riding those. really really stupid. That's just dandy if they don't care though. Sorry, that doesn't answer the question, just don't expect to attract anyone or be accepted in the "biking" community (get a Harley for that.)
