You know, I personally love how gold looks on my hand, around my neck and on my fingers. Its almost like a tradition for us, especially if you are Catholic. Im Catholic and when I did my Confirmation I got two gold neckless of gold one with Our Holy Mother and another with my name on it.

Its just that we are obsess with gold because we think it looks very nice. I have two rings, one neckless and one bracelet with my initials on. It looks nice!

Also, heysemberg its right. In Mexico we dont eat junk food everything is home made.

Its nice question though!! :)

I don't know for sure but my educated guess would be it is a sign of prosperity to them. Gold for centuries has been the monitary system that all of modern civilization has used. So for Mexicans it is a sign of wealth. The more gold they have the richer they feel. The big earing things and names on them is more than likely the issue you have some kids, and young adults who have started a trend to show off there gold which makes them feel richer. Look at the people that aren't claiming they came from poverty or are not from poverty you would never see them with godie gold jewelry or gold teeth. Instead you would see them with big diamonds, fancy cars and big houses. :-)

it's probably cubic zarconia.who knows.i don't get why some people choose to wear so much gold on a regular basis but to each their own.i only wear jewelry on special occasions.i know a few rich people and they don't over-do it by wearing alot of gold.they just wear a single diamond ring or something simple but expensive.i haven't seen the initials in earrings but i have seen initials engraved on belts and necklaces.i think they like to personalize their accessories.either that or they're signaling that they're from a particular gang or they know that wearing those things will attract attention and people will most likely notice the gold/initials & start a conversation with them.

I'm Latina & don't wear gold. It's a trendy thing and also a sign that you can afford to buy it and upward mobility. Conspicuous consumption, same reason other groups wear gold, pimp vehicles, etc.

Are you serious with this question, I'm not Mexican, but it's not just them that wear a lot of jewelry. People in other races wear lots of jewelry, hip/hop stars wear a lot of jewelry, are they all mexican? No.

May be you are thinking about the new rich people, those from rap, hip hop and salsa music & sports (from any ethnicity). The reason is to make feel them important after living their childhood in poor conditions. So pimp my ride....

Just in case the person standing next to them happens to know how to read, they can look at the name in the earring and know who the person is next to them.

That is something they do in Mexico. It's like they would wonder "Why do Americans chew gum so much?" or "Why do they eat a lot of junk food instead of real?".
