I live in a neighbor city. I looked at houses in Columbia before I moved here. If you are looking to move here, I'd suggest near but not in Columbia.
Columbia is a 'planned' community and their community association is very strong. They can tell you how big your bushes can get and what color to paint your house and fine you if you don't comply. And you pay extra on your mortgage for the privilege to boot! An interesting fact about Columbia is the first resident born in Columbia was slated to have a newspaper article about them. When they were born, it was to a mixed race couple and there was a discussion about weather to write the article or not. The founder of the city said to go ahead with it and Columbia became known as welcoming to the mixed race-community, very progressive. (Not too country, is it?)
I'd say they are very liberal as much of MD is. If you want country and need close access to Washington DC, I'd choose Virginia. The further south, the more country.
If Country is what you are looking for, Choose West Virginia. You could commute from there to work in the DC area, but you know what they say about West Virginia.
The tooth brush was invented in WV because if it were invented anywhere else, it would have been called the Teeth Brush!

examine a map. seem on the call--Washington, DC The District of Columbia is an self reliant section, belonging to no state. regrettably, it additionally means that DC citizens have not got an identical representation that state citizens have. Any solid communicate of yankee historic previous or the U. S. shape will clarify why the Founding Fathers desperate on a separate District of Columbia.

I almost moved there, but lived near Westminster instead. Columbia is beautiful place. They developed it so that the business district was seperated from the residentual areas, so you don't have alot of noise/light pollution near your homes. I wouldn't say that anyplace in Maryland is country, but I'm from Kansas so I'm used to country.
