1. Check the power cord, surge protector, etc. to be sure everything is connected.
2. You may have a switch issue. Unplug the power cord from the computer. Then, while holding in the "on" button, plug the computer back in.
3. A power surge could have blown your power supply. They're designed to be the first to go (and protect the rest of your computer). A six year old power supply is very suspect. you can replace the power supply and see if it is the culprit. Probably so.

I have an HP pavilion as well, and it could be that your mother board is going out. That is what happened to mine, and mine was from 2002. Take it to circuit city, or someone else you might trust who can run a diagnostics test on your tower. I had to replace the mother board in mine because it was done. I took mine to Circuit City, and they told me what was wrong, however, they want an awful lot to fix it, SO.....find some small computer repair shop in your area and let them do it, unless you know someone personally who would fix it for you. It's not the parts that cost money, it's the labor. I also ended up replacing the fan in the back as well, and had two more ports added to the back for a newer monitor if I ever wanted to purchase an LED or newer one. Good luck!

Make sure the power cord is plugged in securely. If your connect to a surge protector, make sure it is on. Unplug all the power cords connected to the PC and then plug them back in. If that doesn't work, check to make sure the outlet is working. Finally, try replacing the power supply.

Possibly the power supply is blown. You may be able to smell burnt electrical in the back of the computer. They cost between 20-30 bucks and are not too difficuly to change out.

Power supplies after about 98 have a safety feature built in. IF you unplug the power from the back of the computer, Wait 10 seconds then plug it back in. You have to unplug it from the power supply, unplugging it from the source will have no effect.

Hey did you try to check if the power cord was connected properly and or the power switched on?
If yes then the power on button would be having a loose conection with the unit. Try checking it out for loose connection.

There might be a switch on the back of your computer. Switch that on. This switch is different than the power button on the front.

It could literally mean that the "on" button is not working. By replacing the button, you can turn the computer on again. This happened to me.
