It isn't front page of the paper anymore. Papers need to sell copies of their issues, so they give what the public wants, fresh stories. The Katrian hurricane disaster has been played out. In about 5 years we will have another rash of stories of "where are they now" or " a look in this day in history"
Its the people that still live there that need to get the word out, make your voices heard...just sort of like you are doing now, but on a broader scale.
The days following the storm that is all I heard about, people asking for donations. It does seem that when people donate any amount of money they figure they did their part and ignore any future pleas for help.

There are a lot of people who still need help. All hurricanes are terrible and people lose their homes. However, the government and other agencies can only work so fast. It is up to us, to do what we can to salvage what we can and to start over until our number is called. And to keep at it until we get what we need. We were flooded for two weeks, as an overflow from neighboring bayous. Our levees did NOT break but the water was so high it came over. Well, BECAUSE our levees did not break, guess who got to keep the stagnant filthy water for two weeks? We did. There are people all over in FEMA trailers here also waiting for insurance money, etc. But what else can they do? Its not that people don't care. The resources just aren't always readily available and there.

Why do people assume that the only people who need help are in New Orleans? I live in a town that was hit by Frances, Jeanne, and Wilma, and there are still people without homes. Why doesn't anyone seem to care about them?

Why do some people make such broad generalizations as that?

I don't of anyone who doesn't recognize the need for help in the Katrina stricken areas.

Unfortunately as the expression goes, "out of sight....out of mind."
People who aren't directly affected by something tend to view things from the outside looking in. It's a sad part of human nature. People hear the news and for that moment they are involved....but as time passes they are focusing on other things, other issues and so what was important at one point in time has now been replaced by a new issue.
