Why is it that in top gun the movie everyone had stupid nick names like maverick? Why not just call yourself top gun? You can put that on your flight helmet. Then you could just say why are you guys trying to become top gun? I already am top gun just, give up.

The TOP GUN title has to be earned. The title denotes that you're the best pilot, period. NO PILOT will use TOP GUN as a nickname; and even when those that earn the title do not brag about it because:
1. Earning it was done in service of their country
2. Others had to die for the pilot to work towards the title, and.
3. There will always be somebody faster and better come along, especially as you grow older.

Nicknames in the navy are given to you by your first flight leader. Aparently somebody didn't like Goose or Slider.
As for the movie, some of those names came from some of the pilots being used to actually fly the planes. Remember the names are stencilled on the planes. It makes sense not to have to change them all.
As for Maverick his plane was named Ghost Rider, in reference to his father and he was named Maverick in reference to his flying style, and Goose is short for Mother Goose , probably because he is always telling people stories.

The names are like nicknames, except these losers never had any friends to give them nicknames growing up.
I agree with your point, it's kinda like discovering a new country, stick a flag in it, call it Snorganzvill and hey you've got yourself a country!!!
