you must have a carburator engine sounds as tho you flooded the engine which means you had to much gas in the carb.this happens when a backfire happens from such a condition.dont push on the pedal over and over again just push once on the pedal and turn on the key to start the car. it could be that the points in the distrubor arnt set correctly and should be checked or the timing is not set correctley one or the other.tune up lately?if not have those checked for the proper settings
