I think that striving for popularity stifles individuality in most cases. Kids always emulating what's on TV and judging each other by how much they can look like their idols never really get a chance to develop a sense of true self. The most interesting and well rounded kids seemed to be the ones who didn't buy into that crap. But to be fair that isn't always the case.

Unfortunately kids often times attribute their self-esteem to how "popular" or not they are to the kids they look up to.
Peer pressure is very hard to avoid but a stable home life and parents that have given their kids something to look up to can help balance this out and make it easier to deal with.

I know the effects of popularity right now. It causes "popular" people to be mean to "unpopular" people, sometimes vice versa, and for popular people to get picked for everything first, but unpopular people to just get picked on. It causes a rift in society and spite among groups. It causes people with certain characteristics to be mistreated. It causes hate.

Trust me, I know. I am an unpopular person at school.

popularity will change with the media, when there are more shows like real world with people drinking all the time, more kids will think its okay because tv shows it. its something that will change with time but not neccesarly for the better.

Their development will be exposed. That is a bit different thing than to expose a mature person with ability to cope with analysis 'under microscope'...
