The cheapest route is Birmingham Snow Hill / Moor Street to London Marylebone with Chiltern Railways, but if its from New Street you prefer then Central Trains service to London via Northampton is the cheaper than Virgin, but it takes longer as you have to change at Northampton.
Booking tickets in advance can be cheaper, but you may be restricted to travelling on those services only.
www.nationalrail.co.uk will give you the answers, here you can get train times, fares and links to train operators websites. Silverlink used to do 4 for 2, I think Chiltern still do this so its worth investigating.

If you look on www.thetrainline.com it will let you know if there are any cheap tickets available for that day. The problem is you need to specify which journeys you are interested in and book it and if you want a return do the same. If you don't have a credit/cash card you can always book it at the nearest train station. I got from Leeds - Newcastle for £15 due to booking early.

your better off going from birmingham snow hill/moor street to london marylebone with chiltern. its much cheaper, travel b4 11.00am and its around £26 return, or after 11am only £15 return. the good thing is with these is u dont need to book in advance like virgin, just turn up and buy them there! x

you will desire to e book stupidly a procedures ahead, for e.g they are reserving up til the thirtieth of January 2009 and circulate off top so for yet another e.g Darlington to London - 27/01/09 - 1129dep arr 1410 London to Darlington - 29/01/09 - 1230dep arrv 1511 they are going to be accessible there, the nearer you get to the time of departure the fewer in all probability you're to get them. solid success.

Chiltern Railways (from Moor Street or Snow Hill) do a £15 return, but you will need to check if it is valid when you plan to return.

Go by coach not train, it will save you a fortune. Other ways are Hitch-hiking, cycle or you could bunk on the train (for this you will have to have your wits around you)
