No window air units are smaller than most standard windows. but to be sure just measure the opening the unit will have wings that expand to fill the gaps at the side. You have a bigger problem by the sounds of it you want to put it in a window that opens from the side.so now you dont have a top window you can close to hold the unit in place. And you also have to deal with the space at the top of the unit. You can buy an expandable screen to fill the gap at the top but you still need to build a support to hold it in place. Window units were designed for single or double hung window that open up and down not side to side. It can be done just extra cost and time .

Yes, it would be wise to measure the width and highest point of the window when open. From the sill to the bottom of the hanger if they are double hung windows.... the ones that open up and down. It sounds like your windows crank outwards? Have as much information about the window possible available when you make your purchase and talk to the salesperson. If you shop at Lowe's or Home Depot, they both offer contractor services and might be able to install the A/C unit for you. I would advise you to spend the extra $$ especially if it is going in a second floor or higher window. Hope that helps.

You say your window opens right to left. Is that a swing out window where there is a crank to turn, If you live upstairs you are going to have to mount this air unit for safety on the outside. If you want you can get a airconditioner unit with a plastic build in screen that keeps out the warm air and seals around the unit. If I were in your shoes i would go down to Hoome depot and ask a clerk on the different sizes, make sure you take your measurements along with you the width and length of your window. Maybe your best bet have someone who has done this before and ask them how much they would charge you for installing the unit!

Yes, you need to buy according to window size and no, you don't have to take out the window, but you will need to open it. Take the measurements of the opening portion of your window and ask a salesperson to help you choose an A/C that best suits your needs.

open the window and measure the opening.
write down the height and width
then take those measurements to the store and get a window AC that is SMALLER(important) in heigth and width.
if you do not have an outlet in reach you will need a 3 prong (heavy duty) extension cord.
so instlall it open the window, put it in and then close the window around it
use wood or the baffles they give you to fill the gaps
