People who are unemployed or maybe "between jobs" or who intend to remain independent workers such as babysitters, housesitters, house cleaners, etc. have a really good alternative called short-term medical insurance. It is good coverage for new illnesses or injuries but it does not cover pre-existing conditions. It is really inexpensive compared to other coverage. There is a lot more information at http://www.wavehelp.com/short-term-medical-between-jobs.htm
Best wishes.

Some companies (BCBS comes to mind) have programs where you can get insurance without being associated with a company. You pay a little more, but if you really want insurance, it is worth it. Just have to call around and ask. Another poster mentioned medicaid, you can always do that too.

If you're poor enough, you can get on Medicaid. THe problem is, you have to be really REALLY poor.
If you're merely "poor", you can't afford health insurance. (unless you want to forgo either housing, or food, to fund it).
There are health "plans" that aren't actual insurance, but a monthly fee paid, and then if you visit specific doctors, you get a discount.
