Congrats on getting your book published. How exciting!!!
Free advertisment is hard to come by, but here are some cheaper ways to go about it...
1. Word of mouth always works. I would take free copies of my book and give it to all my friends and relatives and tell them to pass it on. Also, have them write a glowing review for you on Amazon.
2. Create a nice website about you and your book. Then create an automatic signature so that when you sign your name on an e-mail, the name of your book and a link to your website appears under it.
3. Register with groups that cater to readers of your genre and attend their conventions. If it was a romance you wrote, you might join RWA (Romance Writers of America). You will have to pay a yearly fee, but it will be worth it. Join FF&P (Fantasy Fiction and Paranormal). On a personal note, the last convention I went to was a Romantic Times convention, and I think books sellers had to pay $300.00 for a booth to sell their books at the book fair for three days. But to tell you the truth, romance books were not the only books being sold there.
3. Go into your local book stores and ask how you would be able to do a book signing.
4. It sounds like your book is Science Fiction. Print out flyers and pass them out to places that cater to those types of readers. For example, leave some flyers at book stores, comic stores, libraries, coffee shops, laundrymats, etc.
5. Print up business cards. Writing is a job and you are an author. When you meet someone new, give them your business card.
6. "Accidently" leave a copy of your books at places. For example, take your book to a coffee shop and pretend to read it. Then when you get up to leave, "accidently" leave it behind at the table. Hopefully, no one will see you do this. It may end up in the trash, or if your are lucky, the next person to sit at the table might pick it up and become interested and read it. If they like it, they will tell their friends about it. Take a copy to your doctors appointment and leave a copy with the magazines. Perhaps some one will start reading it while waiting to see the doctor, and wanting to finish the story, will buy your book when they get home. Laundry mats is also a good place to leave a copy of your book.

This is one great way, go onto free chats, like this one, and tell people. Sometimes people ask for book suggestions here on Yahoo Answers, tell them about your book.
Make flyers and ask local stores if you can leave your flyers at their check-out stands. You can make the flyers on your computer, it's cheap and easy.
Yahoo groups is a free service, make a group where people can come and talk about your books, and check when you have a new book coming out. You can add this onto your flyers.
Yahoo also has a websites, their not free, but their cheap.
Ask your friends and family members to tell their friends about your book.
Post your flyers at bus stops and in areas you know where people often walk.
Gift a few of your books to your local Library, and ask if you give some of your flyers to them too.
Just don't forget to add what your book is about...

There are a number of free resources available to advertise your website and increase traffic. You can advertise on relevant free classifieds ( www.craigslist.org) ,directories (dmoz) and relevant forums. Major search engines like Yahoo, Google , MSN search are a major source of visitors for most websites and you can submit your website to these search engines for free. You can also run contests offering prizes to regular visitors. I have found the following website useful
