I find that the great thing about art is that it is so open to anybody. I would think that it can boil down to the viewer and the producer. So as an artist are you trying to relay a message to communicate to a viewer or are you offering something to communicate to yourself?
As an artist I find that most of my work is simply for me, it seems whatever I do, something about what I am going through during that time gets reflected in my work. Whether people like it or not doesn't matter to me.
As an art teacher I find that students starting out need a feeling of communication through their tried works, sort of an approval system, whether they like it or their peers accept it.
So to answer you personally, what makes me want to create art is simply me living life. It's like breathing- it is how I make amends with my past AND how I communicate in the world I am in. Sounds lame and cheesy-philosphical I know, but it's the truth, any artist can relate to one or the other.
The real question should be what makes your art great? ... and the answer is because you are doing it (wink).

It isn't about wanting to do art, it's about needing to. It's the only meaningful way humans have of describing those deeper parts of themselves that exist beyond the normal range of the senses to the world around them.
Art is what you find inside a book that hasn't been judged by it's cover.

I love to paint, and I think the reason I do is because it brings me therapy. Every painting I look at that I've done brings back a memory of what I was going through or feeling or thinking at that time.
