What a great topic to discuss. You are not the only one with the same question or thoughts. Over the years more than ever, what seems to motivate so called "Hollywood" producers is what sells.
Sales has always been an integral part of Hollywood, but today, everyone is trying to seriously make a buck. There are tons of good ideas floating around in Hollywood, but its the major producers that decide what movies they push to the mainstream.
And producers are like anyone else, they have opinions, however, producers seem to believe with a passion what will sell in the markets and what will NOT sell. With there supposed scientific approach to making such decisions while working in there laboratories, they often overlook some pretty good ideas, why?
They would rather follow what ideas worked in the past rather than take a chance on new ideas or patterns of plots and scripts. So, they choose the comfortable route of travel rather than the unknown or more risky types of stories or ideas.
Hollywood believes they understand you better than you, what types of films you will enjoy and makes lots of money for the producers and investors. How about that? (smile) -- Paul Stanley

Some of the best movies come from books, always have and always will. What makes those movies especially difficult to film is living up to the expectations of the readers. I agree, old TV shows (The Mod Squad, Shaft, Charlie's Angels, Startsky and Hutch) are not the greatest avenue for a film and have not done as well hoped.
Remakes are someone's way of trying to bring in a new audience and pay homage, usually, to the original. I agree with you, it's running low on ideas as far as what is advertised to us to see, but my favourite movie this whole summer, A Scanner Darkly, based off Phillip K Dick's novel, was excellent and I'm happy it was made, but I also am a graphic artist, and the animation style was very inspiring to me.

I was just thinking the same thing. I have not seen anything original for a while. Well not anything worth watching. Superman, Spider-man, bewitched, duke of Hazard, King Kong, Herbie, War of the world. I think the movie world is becoming too commercialized. More focus on making money rather than portraying the human spirit. They are using less materials from writers who are inspired by the human condition. And then a next thing is version of versions. The Mummy I Mummy II, Spider-man I Spider Man II. Xmen. There no movie right now at the theater that I consider going to the theater to watch. Most of them are only worth watching on cable.

Yes. Even Animal Planet has a reality TV show called "Meerkat Manor" where they follow a bunch of meerkats around to see what they do. It seems that when someone comes up with an original idea and it's a smash hit, all the other studios create knock-offs that try to ride on the coattails of the hit movie.

Hollywood ran out of ideas so long ago that I stopped going to movies. Occasionaly, something comes out that is original but then it just plain sucks. I guess in the future the Oscars will have to get rid the Best Original Screenplay category.

Yes indeed. All Hollywood is doing is re-doing old ideas, and things which have been popular in the past. Case in point, the new Miami Vice movie.

Not yet, but slowly. Once in a blue moon, we see a good movie. "Inside Man" was pretty good, and so was "Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift". Most movies today are so retarded, that there is simply no point to it......(Hint Hint: The Grudge, When a Stranger Calls, and Date Movie.)

Hollywood ran out of ideas ages ago. Doubt that's gonna change soon. It's very boring, especially since most of the movies are horrible.

Your right...and all movies now have endings that go on for 30 minutes or longer...'specially action movies, I feel like I am in a room full of hyperactive toddlers, there is too much action...movies have lame plots and depend on actors with big names to carry the whole movie...geez, don't get me started.

not just you.. I can pretty much right the ending or the full script to every movie I've seen this year... it's a shame, originality is apparently dead. Sometimes there are some that surprise me but it's been a while.
