Vitamin deficiencies can cause an animal to develop odd eating habits. It's also possible that it's just getting old and the faculties aren't what they used to be. Stress can cause this as well. Mice don't live much more than a couple years and only then if extremely healthy. Overbreeding and inbreeding, especially in pet store varieties, tend to increase ailments such as siezures and tumors. I've had several mice for pets and an occasional rat. I even used white mice in highschool to do a sociological study on that spanned 2 years and included population pressure. I took care of all of them and had to learn a great deal about their care and feeding. Mice have personalities... I know how fond one can get of one. Good luck.

A behavior that is very common in among carnivous animals. Technically this is known as coprophagia. When given the chance, many animals will eat the feces of other animals. The behavior may be derived from the carnivorous (meat-eating) heritage of our pets. Carnivores frequently eat the internal organs and stomach contents (including poop) of the animals that they kill. As a result, eating the feces of other animals may be a normal extension of their carnivore behavior. There may be proteins and other nutrients in the feces that are eaten.
There are a number of animals that normally eat their own feces or the feces of other members of their species. These include rabbits, horses and rats. In these animals it is thought that eating of feces may provide nutrients, enzymes or bacteria that help with digestion.
Also, one theory besides nutrients include that it may be related to boredom or stress. Another is that it is related to digestive deficiencies. Neither theory has any support at the present time.
Controlling or stopping coprophagia is very difficult. Veterinarians can supply a substance that can be added to a food that makes the feces distasteful. Sometimes this is helpful. Most of the time, the best way to stop the behavior is to prevent the animal from getting to feces.

Your mouse has digestive problems, animals will sometimes eat their own feces when they don't feel well in order to replenish the bacteria in there gut that helps them digest food. give your mouse some plain yugurt with live active cutures. the package will say live active cutures. this should help, also separate the two mice, b/c the healthy one might kill the sick one, also normal aminal behavor. Good luck!

well I'm in pre-vet in high school i don't know why it would do that but it could just be a habit like a dog eating nasty things, but i think the best way to tell would be to look at its poop, if it's solid it should be fine, if it is runny and loose, it may have something wrong with it. i would just keep an eye on it. it might also be the heat getting to it.

Make extra sure the mouse is in a very clean place, has fresh water and has both solid and a little bit of fresh food.

A lot of things can cause corpryphagia (sp?) such as a digestive disorder, a lack of a certain nutrient, water loss, or just plain stress. The animal may have been stressed since you were gone. Or, he could just be odd now.

Sweetie pie, gurl, I thought you were referring to your computer mouse. Oooooh a live mouse. Sounds like it has been starved and eating its own waste for lack of food.

I don't have an answer, but the idea of a vet adding something to feces to make it "distasteful" was sort of funny to me. I mean, you'd think normally the fact that it's POOP would make it distasteful to begin with! LOL
