Something smaller than a scarf, and doesn't take up most of a ball of yarn. Something w/ Fun Fur would be excellent, but not essential. The only thing I can think of is a bookmark but that's slightly too small. And something I can make using 10 1/2 US size needles (6.5 mm)

If you knit two cuffs and a collar in different colors you can have a new sweater every day!
Cuffs are two strips equal in length and width and the collar, you cast on the length of the neckline then knit a few rows then add stitches and add stitches.
or
two cuffs and a matching extra wide head band that can warm ears and look good
or
you could knit "boot cuffs" they are just wide bands that keep the cold air out and look wicked cool without having to wear leg warmers!

I like to knit up squares in different textures or colors, but always making the squares the same size (7" to 9" is nice). It lets you see if you like a new stitch or yarn before committing to a big project. You won't have wasted yarn on a little 4" gauge swatch either. And since the squares are all the same size, they can be easily sewn together to make a pillow, blanket, rug, etc. My favorite small project at the moment is to use a nice cotton yarn for dishcloths, replacing my old dishcloths when they get gross.

I'd go with socks (usually one ball per pair) Then add the fun fur around the ankle with cotton for the foot.

or make Hats, both adult and babies (they make great gifts).
