this is a character study of a man who is on the bottom slope of his life, and a woman who has just begun hers (outside of school anyways). its interesting, charming, and true. this is without a doubt my favorite movie mainly because bill murray has mastered the art of melancholy, and scarlet johannson is a young, confused kid. the spark and relationship that forms makes it seem as if these two people are the center of the world - one that has seemingly lost the ability to love someone as a friend, even if they were a complete stranger at the beginning of the week. the only depressing part of this movie - if you can call it depressing - is that the two people must seperate and live the lives they have already chosen for themselves. although the ironic thing is that they both knew it would not last forever, and yet they showed no sadness about it. Instead they enjoyed their time together, just as i enjoyed watching the film. sofia capolla does an astounding job of capturing that initial spark that happens between people, and the realization that it will not last. so as i said before it can be sad, but you must realize that the characters were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to meet and spend time together as they did.
this movie is not for people that just don't get movies about life and character studies and the interactions therein. the best quote i could find about this film would have to be this:
"The love between the two characters is not one of lust but rather one of emotional and psychological need. Plotless, pointless, and boring? Only if you want all your stories packaged nicely with pretty paper and pretty ribbons"

I love this movie, I saw it in theatres, I own it on DVD. Sofia Coppola cast two great talents for the leads, and although it is a quiet little piece of drama, Bill Murray was still a cool cat, so mellow compared to the way I first saw him on SNL and Stripes.

I found the film depressing, but only because it portrays holiday romances in a very accurate, and genuine way. I loved it! Reminded me of some of my younger encounters!! Left me reminiscing, and thinking, "What if?"

I was pleasantly surprised at discovering-finally-a realistic film for a change! I'm just tired of all those films and TV series where everyone is happy because they are surrounded by people who understand and feel them. Let's face it; we all feel lonely but don't dare to admit it.

It is a non love story. The girl's boyfriend is cheating on her so she turns to an older man who isn't cheating on his wife and finds a friend. No good story there.
