A US Citizen filing a bankruptcy from outside the US will run into a whole gamet of problems. Finding an attorney to do this for free is probably not possible.

Most Legal Aid societies do not do bankruptcy law. A bankruptcy (chapter 7) costs at least $299 to file, and of course, the attorney wants to be paid for his/her time. Not only that, but since the Bankruptcy Reform Act, attorneys are held to a much higher standard of responsibility for the bankruptcy, and they are consequently having to take more time on each case. The attorney's fees, predictably, went up as well.

If you are outside the US, depending on your living and working situation, you may be eligible for bankruptcy protection (or its equivalent) in the country where you reside. You might want to consult an attorney there.

For information on a US attorney, consult the state bar association of your most recent home state.
