Hello~
We are planing to open up a pet store in Anderson, CA by 1st weekend in Dec. 2006. The Store's name will be " Pet Paradise" ( If you can think of a good slogan ( Like petco's is " Where the pets go) for our store that would be great!)
The outside of the store will be bright yellow and the sign will be blue and green neon. Once you walk in, the floor ( if the health dept. will allow us to do this.) will be covered with sand. You will hear tropical music in the back ground. The checkout counter ( if you can think of a good design for the check out counter that would be great) will be in front. In the middle of the store you will see a small rivier go through the store. This is where we will have our Koi, large goldfish and Turtles. There will be a bridge ( we will have a net that will seprate the fish from turtles under the bridge.) that you will walk over to get to the fish area. We will be selling fresh & saltwater fish.

As far as the other animals are concerned, we are not sure where we are going to put them. Any ideas? Also, would you like to see more bright colors inside or cooler colors inside like blue and green? Any other ideas would be great.
We will be selling everything but, cats and dogs. We will be working with animal shelters twice a month to adopt out the dogs and cats.
The only other animals we will not carry are gerbils, ferrets & heghogs. Because they are illegal in the state of CA. You are looking at 5-10 years in Jail if caught buying, selling or owning these animals.
We will love hearing your ideas.
Tell me ideas that you like in your own towns little pet store!!! Thanks!

The reasons for not selling dogs & cats in CA is the laws are so strict for selling them in a pet store that it is not worth it. If something goes genically wrong with a cat or dog I sold to someone with in 5 years of selling that animal I have to give them their money back. Not worth it.

What, no cats? No pups?

Instead of saying "pets", and setting up those of us who favor mammals for disappointment, I'd call the store "Something's Fishy".

No cats....what a let-down!

P.S. Why in the name of heaven are gerbils illegal?!

If the name is Pet Paradise, the slogan could be the Nearest Place to Heaven on Earth for Your Pet. For a checkout area you could get a couple of those luau type bars with the stools that people use in their backyards for partys and put your counter area in between them. They have a little straw covered roof that completes the theme. You can even buy them over the Internet at places like Big Lots and the Christmas Tree Shoppe. Best of luck to you on your new venture. Have a good night!

Thank you for doing adoptions and not selling cats and dogs!!!!
Your store sound really cool! i would shop there! There is a store like that here in ohio, called Adventure Aquarium, they only have fish related stuff, but its so cool, is all in blues and greens, anf they have huge beautiful tanks everywere and a meandering koi pond running through the middle of the store where u can acctualy reach ina nd pet them if u want to! the only thing i can think of that would be cooler is a similar aet up with sting rays in it!
As far as slogans and are set up, i had a hard time comping up with a name for my own beading company so i will leave that to you, good luck!!!

Sounds more like an exotic pet store than an everyday pet store. You may want to have something about that in your slogan. For a counter, I see something curvy with an avocado colored top and wavy water lines along the front and sides. I would go for setting up areas for the different exotic animals you will have ("Reptile Area", "Mammal Area", "Bird Area") with designs of the types of animals on the walls.

Honestly the idea of having to trudge through sand isn't at all appealling to me. You may want to consider a flooring with the appearance of sand or something similar--or even having areas of sand sectioned off from the area where people walk. As far as a slogan and such, you want want to think of hiring someone to help you with your marketing. If not that, please at least get someone when it comes time to design your signs and logo and such. Too many small business make tacky things in Word and decide they have a viable logo. You might also want to try getting some feedback under the small business category here for more startup tips.

Ok, the counter you could do up with a grass skirt, ya know like the drink counters on the islands in the movies!
The walls you should do a tropical mural on. Like trees and the beach and birds and stuff like that, if you have the area to do that.
Other then that if I lived in CA I would soo go to your pet store!!
Good Luck!!

I'm glad you'll be working to adopt out cats and dogs,
I love the sand and bridge idea, you may have to go for the faux sand paint or something...
Checkout counter could look like a tropical hut- rough wood and thatching, tiki torches...

I think the idea of having sand is a little out there. I would not want to walk through it in my shoes especially with kids! Think of how hard that would be to keep it clean. Especially with all the animals there. I do like the brifge idea though.

Good ideas, but remember when decorrating, how is this place giong to smell? If it smells the least bit "fishy" I wouldn't spend 5 minutes in here. That's why I don't go to mom and pop places, and end up going to petsmart. If it's not big enough, it's going to stink.
Good luck
