i just bought one and i saw that there is a light sensor either im technologically retarded or is it something new???

Ambient Light Sensors (ALS) are used to detect light. On most applications on stuff that's too bright or too dark, an ALS allows the device to know how bright something should be. In your application, it probably controls the brightness for the lit keypad (Where the numbers are) and the screen.
