I'm not talking about decriminalizing marijuana, but marijuana possession in small amounts would not result with jail time and the loss of scholarships and federal financial aid for students, but instead would be a large fine. A lesser penalty and still illegal.

yes, jailtime varies from state to state. but sticking to the question, would you vote for a lesser penalty?

Absolutely. I was arrested for selling a controlled substance that was actually a dime bag or few joints worth of marijuana. I was in jail for four days, sent to inpatient rehab for 30, outpatient for 6 months and put on probation for 6 months. Now surely there was too much $ spent on that little bag. I don't mean to sound like I feel I was treated unfairly but only saying that, that time and money could have actually benefited our society. I am all for order and authority but of course am also aware that it won't always be used to its full potential and in this case I don't think that it is.

In NY pot was decriminalized back in the 70's. Less than 25 grams is a violation and nets a $100 fine. There should be no penalty for growing and pocessing a plant. Alchohol, on the other hand must be manufactured ad, while legal in all states, causes many deaths and much damage each year. Rarely, if ever, does one hear of a pot related death.

Legalize it if you ask me.
To answer the question, yes they should take away those type of penalties. I mean the loss of a scholarship is going to alter some peoples whole lives just for smoking it.
I'm not one for smoking it but that's just dumb to do that to someones life and ruin their future.

Depends on how much you are talking about! Right now if you get caught with an 1/8 or less then its a fine and you get your weed taken away. So I think thats fair.
